What does qualified ENERGY STAR mean?

Homes that earn the ENERGY STAR must meet guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. ENERGY STAR qualified homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). ENERGY STAR qualified homes can include a variety of energy-efficient features, such as effective insulation, high performance windows, tight construction and ducts, efficient heating and cooling equipment, and ENERGY STAR qualified lighting and appliances. These features contribute to improved home quality and homeowner comfort, and to lower energy demand and reduced air pollution. ENERGY STAR also encourages the use of energy-efficient lighting and appliances, as well as features designed to improve indoor air quality.

    Did you know that your home can be a greater source of pollution than your car? In fact, 16 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are generated from the energy used in houses nationwide. Energy used in our homes often comes from the burning of fossil fuels at power plants, which contributes to smog, acid rain, and global warming. Simply put, the less energy we use in our homes, the less air pollution we generate.

What do you mean by Healthy Home?

Our homes are designed to minimize opportunities for mold and mildew growth in walls and wall cavities which are major causes of indoor air pollution. People with allergies and asthma in particular can benefit from this type of construction. For one family with an asthmatic child this meant that after one year of living in an EDB home, the child did not have one asthma attack. They purchased our home for our unique construction techniques to minimize mold and mildew. Proper air humidification and air filtration are important components of our warm air systems.

You mentioned that you are an award winning builder. What awards have you won?

We have been Eastern Connecticut's multiple award-winning builder, designing and building high quality homes since 1985. Voted "Home Builder of the Year" for two consecutive years, 1997-1998, by the Home Builder's Association of Eastern Connecticut as well as "Best Model Home" and "Best Energy Efficient Home" during the state home building competition of 2000.  We were more recently voted 2010 Builder of the Year. Our company today has become a leader in the home building industry.

Isn't Geothermal heating & cooling best utilized in the Midwest?

No. That's a common misperception. We drill wells here in the Northeast which makes taking BTU's in the winter or displacing BTU's into the earth in the summer much easier than when Geothermal was first introduced in the Midwest in which they laid the loops out horizontally. Over time, the technology has improved and the costs have come down making it much more feasible to install with wells and increasing the time frame of your rate of return. No matter where a Geothermal is installed, decreasing your dependency on foreign oil can only be a good thing.

When obtaining a construction loan, will I need to close a second loan when converting to a permanent mortgage?

Not all lending institutions offer a seamless procedure in converting a construction loan to a permanent mortgage. EDB works with a number of lenders who offer easy and convenient conversion programs with only one closing.

What are some of your storage solutions that differ from other builders?

First, our Master Suite closets are packed full of Wiremade shelving. We tell our installers to fill the closet with as much as they can fit in. We also fully plywood our attics for large amounts of storage space. This is especially convenient when there is a finished basement and storage space is an issue.

How is it that you can use such large windows while other builders use smaller windows in order to meet energy codes?

The answer is simple. We will spend the money necessary to purchase windows that are larger in size and even more energy efficient than what the typical builder would put in their homes. We use super energy efficient Kohltech brand windows built to withstand the brutal Canadian winters.

What is your square footage price?

Actually, we do not charge by the square foot. It's very deceiving to potential homebuyers. What drives the cost for the home is the style and the features and amenities. We have no way of knowing what one customer to the next will want in a home so to have a square footage cost that works across the board is impossible. What we prefer to do is put together a detailed cost estimate for our potential clients and let them see how we arrived at that amount.
